Keeping Temp Workers Safe On The Job

Who is responsible for the safety of temp workers at the job site?

Staffing agencies like Apprentice Personnel take the lead when it comes to protecting workers the agency sends out to local businesses. They make sure employees are skilled and know in advance what they’ll be doing. And, they require employers to provide some level of supervision.

Generally speaking, there’s a shared responsibility between the employer and the temp company to keep workers out of harm’s way, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA. Both the client and the agency are required to conform to OSHA rules.

Preventing accidents in the first place is Apprentice Personnel’s goal. The agency works closely with potential employers and employees from the start. For example, workers being sent out to wash dishes will be instructed to wear slip-resistant shoes.

It’s vital that client employers specify upfront during the initial stages what their requirements are; what, if any, hazards employees may encounter; and, qualifications a candidate must have to perform the work.

Once workers gets to the job site, OSHA requires employers to provide site-specific training and update employees on any new hazards that may exist at that time.

Clear communication makes a huge difference when it comes to safety. That’s why Apprentice Personnel goes out to new sites to meet customers, introduce new groups of workers and generally keep things on track.

If an accident should occur involving a temp employee, immediate action is critical. The agency works to get the employee the help they need and sits down with the employer to understand what happened.

Keeping temp workers safe and preventing accidents are vitally important goals for staffing firms across the nation. Safety-conscious clients should expect nothing less when they’re picking a temp agency to meet their needs.
