How to get the most out of your staffing agency

Using a temporary staffing agency can help your business in a number of ways, especially if your business is small and can’t support as many full-time employees as you’d like to have on your payroll.

As a small-business owner, you can leverage the flexibility of a temporary job agency to fill your need for employees without the expense of training and benefits and without having to worry about fluctuations in a work environment that changes seasonally or by other factors, giving you more control over expenditures and management of your business.

Here are a few ideas on how best to leverage your relationship with a temporary staffing firm:

  • Plan a yearly schedule that indicates those times of the year when you will benefit from having extra employees on hand. Holidays, vacation times of regular employees whose positions you might need to fill on a temporary basis, and planned special events are times you will want to make use of temporary employees. Schedule these events ahead of time with your temporary agency to help ensure you will have temp workers available when you need them.
  • Provide your temporary agency with the information necessary to help you staff your business. Give the agency information about the times of year when your business is likely to need more employees to help the agency prepare for your needs. Provide the agency with the information it will need to choose the appropriate candidates for your business as well, ensuring that you will have skilled employees available. Schedule ahead if possible.
  • Request the same temporary employees you’ve used before if they are still available through your temporary agency. Temporary employees who have worked for you before will be more capable of performing the job more efficiently and will save you the minimal training time necessary to transition them into your place of business.
